Summer Afternoons...

"Summer afternoon - summer afternoon; to me those have always been the two most beautiful words in the English language."  -- Henry James

For me, the month of August could've lasted forever.  Trey and I really hit our groove, the weather was perfect, and I just didn't want it to end.  Between our slow lazy mornings, playing on the deck, and meeting up with friends, I was in summer paradise.

Trey is STILL really into playing with his Sesame Street guys and doing voices and making up stories.  Again and again and again.  Every so often we throw in the farm just to change it up a bit.  I love his imagination and his desire to make up stories, but I get REALLY bored with this.

Playing Sesame Street/Farm again
Why is it that I have to actually hold the little guy?
Every time I set it down on the floor, Trey immediately puts it back in my hand.
I often ask him, "Why does it matter?!?" but he has yet to give me a good answer.

One day Trey and I met Mindy and Camille at a park in West Linn.  I knew there was a splash pad there, but I didn't bother bringing a swimsuit or a towel because as I told Mindy, "Oh, Trey doesn't like to play in those things."  I was so wrong.

Now that Trey is eating like crazy, I have been put to task about offering him a variety of different foods that he wouldn't eat before. Guess what? He still doesn't want to eat them.  I read on this blog about muffin tin tapas where you put different foods in muffin tins and kids will eat it up.  I thought I'd start out with things that he normally likes, and he loves the muffin tin snacks. Now I just need to start sneaking in other foods into his muffin cups.

Here's a picture from another hill walk with Kerry. This was up in Forest Park; I just love how close we are to parks like this right in the city.  After this walk, we headed over to St. Johns neighborhood for lunch.  I feel like I need a tour guide over there because I know it's a cool area, but I don't feel the joy when I'm trying to find a place to eat or drink.

Trey went to daycare twice a week this summer to hold our full time spot for fall.  I think it was good for him to stay in the rhythm of daycare, and it was great for me to have a few days a week of how summer used to be pre-kid.  One day I picked him up and he was an elephant.  Super cute.

On my birthday we went to breakfast with Kellie at Dyer's restaurant, and then we went to meet Kathleen and the boys at a park.  Again, I came unprepared for the splash pad (to be fair, I didn't know there would be one), so Trey ran around in his diaper.  What's gotten into this kid that he is becoming more adventurous and less fearful??  I love it....I think.

On the night of my birthday, we got a sitter and went with Julie and Tim to Ardiri Winery in Cornelius for a wine club member's event (they are members, not us).  It was so nice to sit out in the nice weather and enjoy some wine.  Nyree was their babysitter, so she came over after we got home and we enjoyed some adult beverages on our deck.  It was a perfect way to round out a perfectly delightful birthday.

Trey and I didn't make it to the zoo as much this summer as we did last year, but we snuck in one last trip before the summer ended.  Trey was adamant about wearing his DJ Lance hat and his Super Grover cape while carrying his Yo Gabba Gabba boombox.  We got a lot of looks as we walked through the zoo, but I think they were all mostly in amusement.

Trey and I have totally bonded this summer (although, to be honest, we were pretty bonded before), and he has been super cute about it.  One day this summer he said, unprompted, "Mommy, you're my best friend."  I love you too, honey.  I love you too.

Now I want to eat out of muffin tins. What a fun idea.
