He's THREE!!!

It's really hard to believe that Trey is three years old.  On one hand, I feel like the newborn/baby days were just yesterday, but on the other, I feel like they are a lifetime away.

The birthday boy pondering being three

He has decided he's happy about it!

There are some things that I really love about Trey as he turns three: I love his constant draw to perform.  He loves to be "on skage," he loves to sing, and he loves to act out parts from the shows that he watches.  Put him in a situation where he has to be remotely athletic?  Forget it.  Give him any type of platform or piece of furniture that looks like a stage?  He's in heaven.

I love Trey's memory and learning of new things.  He has been coming up with words and phrases that amaze me.  His constant questioning sometimes drives me nuts, but, secretly, I wouldn't change it for anything.  What does this mean?  What does that mean?  What is this?  It goes on and on.  I love how my little boy who had no words at 18 months can now, at three, tell you the letters and sounds, count higher than I would expect (not sure of the number), has one to one correspondence, has known his colors for over a year now, labels his shapes, and can even do some simple inferencing and predicting when we read.  Last week we were playing astronauts in his room and he counted backwards from 10 all on his own.  Maybe that's normal for a newly three year old, but I test 7 and 8 year olds who can't do that, so I was very impressed.

While trying and requiring patience, I love how Trey wants to "do it myself."  This has led to some new independence (and lots of extra time).   From getting dressed to meal time, Trey often does not want any help at all.  I've recently acquired a new developmental chart, and while those things can be dangerous for a neurotic mom like me, I like knowing what skills to teach him and push him on at his age.

I love Trey's love of his family and friends.  Lately he has been saying things like "You are beautiful, mama," "I like you, mother," and "I like you, father."  He will also use the love word, but I think it is even cuter when he says "I like you, father," and comes up and hugs Randy's leg.  Trey still loves to cuddle (at least with me), and I am trying to cherish every moment because I know in a few years my cuddles will likely be gone.

On Trey's birthday, June 20th, we drove down to Salem.  Trey and I went to the Gilbert House and I was pretty disappointed.  To me, it was a run-down Children's Museum; however, I did like the outdoor area that provided Trey a lot of opportunity to run and climb.  After the Gilbert House, we went and met my dad for lunch.  Nothing better than seeing Grandpa for lunch on your birthday!

Trey found his "skage" and could have stayed here all morning,
but he was run off by a bunch of big kids.  Poor birthday boy.

Trey's birthday was on a Thursday this year, so we had Julie and her family over for dinner.   I made a cake, and Trey helped me decorate it.  He loved putting the sprinkles on the cake and wanted to use ALL of the Elmo heads (from last year - I knew I saved those for a reason!).

Grady (20.5 months)

Randy and I decided to just get Trey one big present this year, so we got a keyboard.  He loves playing it and dancing to the automated tunes that play.

Our family on Trey's 3rd birthday

Saturday we had Trey's birthday party.  I tried to keep it kid focused and only invite people with kids who Trey knows and plays with (rather than invite all of my friends who have kids who Trey doesn't really know).  I was bummed when some people couldn't make it due to being out of town, weddings, etc, but the size turned out just fine.  Trey really only wanted to play with Camille anyway, so it worked out perfectly.

Go Fish!
Randy didn't want to bother with this game and said, "One game is enough.  Why are we playing two?"  I said, "Because Go Fish was my favorite birthday game growing up, AND I WANT TO PLAY IT!"  I was very happy when the kids had a great time playing it and wanted to play again and again.  See, Randy???

Overall, I was happy with how Trey's birthday and party turned out.  I feel so grateful for the support of family and friends who have been there for us the past three years.  Every so often I literally stop in my tracks in awe of the circle of people we have in our lives who offer us friendship, love, entertainment, advice, and laughter.  Thanks to each and every one of you!
